Sony shutter count checker

Drop an original photo from your Sony camera to see its shutter count. The file is read on your device and never uploaded.

Drop an original Sony photo

JPEG or RAW (NEF, ARW, PEF, DNG, RAF) straight from the memory card. Read on this device, never uploaded.

You can also paste a copied image. Heads-up: some phone photo pickers remove location before a browser ever sees the file. If a photo you know is geotagged shows no GPS here, pick it through the Files app instead.

Use the original file

Take a fresh photo, copy it from the card to your computer or phone without opening it in an editor, and drop it here. Editors, phones’ share sheets and social networks strip the maker notes where the count lives.

Which Sony cameras are supported

Sony Alpha mirrorless (ILCE) and SLT/ILCA bodies store a count in an enciphered block. The position of the counter differs between generations; ExifProbe uses the model-specific offsets documented by ExifTool. Cyber-shot compacts (DSC) and Xperia phones do not record one.

Other ways to find it

Sony does not show the count in camera menus. Reading an original JPEG or ARW is the usual method. Newer models (2023+) count only mechanical-shutter frames.

Rated shutter life

Sony does not publish shutter ratings for most models; figures circulating online for consumer bodies are generally unofficial. Use the count to compare against similar second-hand listings rather than as a life expectancy.

Other brands: Nikon · Canon · Fujifilm · Pentax and Ricoh. Or see how shutter counts are stored.

Questions people ask

How do I check the shutter count on a Sony camera?

Copy an original, unedited JPEG or ARW from the card and drop it into the checker. ExifProbe deciphers Sony’s 0x9050 block in your browser and reads the counter at the offset for your model.

Does the Sony count include silent shooting?

For many models the counter does not increase in silent (electronic shutter) mode, and on the newest bodies the value is explicitly mechanical-shutter frames only. The total number of photos taken can therefore be higher.

Why is the Sony result marked as best-effort?

Sony has changed its maker-note layout several times. We follow the publicly documented offsets, but a new model or firmware can move the counter. Cross-check with a second photo: the number should go up by the shots you took in between.
