Nikon shutter count checker
Drop an original photo from your Nikon camera to see its shutter count. The file is read on your device and never uploaded.
Drop an original Nikon photo
JPEG or RAW (NEF, ARW, PEF, DNG, RAF) straight from the memory card. Read on this device, never uploaded.
You can also paste a copied image. Heads-up: some phone photo pickers remove location before a browser ever sees the file. If a photo you know is geotagged shows no GPS here, pick it through the Files app instead.
Use the original file
Take a fresh photo, copy it from the card to your computer or phone without opening it in an editor, and drop it here. Editors, phones’ share sheets and social networks strip the maker notes where the count lives.
Which Nikon cameras are supported
Nikon DSLRs (D-series from the D70 onward) and Z-series mirrorless bodies write the total actuation count into every JPEG and NEF. Coolpix compacts do not.
Other ways to find it
On the camera itself the count is not shown in menus. Reading an unedited JPEG or NEF straight off the card is the standard method.
Rated shutter life
Nikon publishes shutter durability for many bodies in their specifications, typically 100,000 cycles for entry models and 150,000 to 400,000 for pro bodies. Check the spec sheet for your exact model.
Other brands: Sony · Canon · Fujifilm · Pentax and Ricoh. Or see how shutter counts are stored.
Questions people ask
How do I check the shutter count on a Nikon?
Take a new photo, copy the original JPEG or NEF from the card without editing it, and drop it into the checker above. The ShutterCount tag that Nikon writes into the maker notes is read in your browser.
Does the Nikon shutter count include Live View and video?
Nikon counts shutter actuations. Live View photos are counted; video recording generally is not, because the shutter stays open.
Why does my Nikon photo show no shutter count?
The file was probably re-saved by an editor, phone app or social network, which drops maker notes. Use the original file from the memory card. Coolpix compacts never record a count.
