What you can change, and what you should know
EXIF dates are stored as plain text in the form 2026:05:14 08:42:10 with no time zone unless the camera also wrote an offset tag. The editor updates the "original" and "digitized" dates together so that apps agree with each other. It leaves the OffsetTime tags alone; if your photos were taken abroad, adjust the time to local time where they were taken.
- Fixing a camera clock: a common reason to edit dates is a camera that was never set, so photos sort out of order next to phone shots.
- Adding credit: photographers add Artist and Copyright so the name travels with the file. Most social networks strip it anyway, so also watermark if it matters.
- Adding a location: typing coordinates geotags a photo taken on a camera without GPS, so it appears on the map in Apple Photos, Google Photos or Lightroom.

Questions people ask
How do I change the date a photo was taken?
Load a JPEG, change "Date taken", and save. ExifProbe writes the new value to DateTimeOriginal, CreateDate (DateTimeDigitized) and, if you tick the box, the file modified date, then re-reads the file to confirm.
Does editing EXIF re-compress the photo?
No. Only the EXIF block is rewritten; the compressed image data is copied unchanged.
Can I edit HEIC or PNG files?
Browsers cannot rewrite HEIC, and PNG EXIF support in other apps is patchy, so the editor works on JPEG. Other formats can be converted to JPEG first with one click (one re-compression at 92% quality).
Why does my gallery still show the old date?
Gallery apps sort by the date in their own database or by the file system date. Re-import the saved file, and on a computer check the file's created and modified dates too.
Is it legal to change photo metadata?
Editing your own photos is fine. Changing dates or locations to mislead someone, for example in an insurance claim or as evidence, can be fraud. Also note that EXIF edits are easy to detect when compared with other copies.
